What stands out (July 2026)

WPA is the only insurer of the nine that publishes a claims authorisation rate — 97% (data at 31 December 2025) — and it tops the independent tables: the only Which? Recommended PMI Provider, first in both the Fairer Finance PMI index (Spring 2025) and the Which? survey (July 2025). It's a not-for-profit with 125+ years of history. The Fast Track pathways are excellent: unlimited virtual dermatology (Fast Track Skin Support), self-referred physiotherapy, and Fast Track Cancer Diagnosis giving unlimited scans and biopsies to reach a breast, prostate or skin cancer diagnosis.

The cancer caveat

Unlike Bupa, Aviva, Vitality and The Exeter, WPA's core Complete Health policy does not include full cancer treatment cover — Cancer Care is an optional extra. When added it's one of the best on the market: no financial caps from diagnosis through palliative care, targeted cancer therapies and ATMPs from WPA's approved list, and a £6,000/year NHS cancer cash benefit. But price a WPA quote like-for-like: a cheap quote without Cancer Care isn't comparable to an Aviva quote where it's standard. Note also that adding Cancer Care at a later renewal requires a new application and can attract personal exclusions — decide at the start.

Cover detail

Core outpatient contributes £250/year toward specialist consultations (extendable to £500, £1,000 or unlimited), with complex scans in full even when GP-referred — unusual and valuable. The NHS cash benefit is generous (£4,500/year non-cancer). Mental health core = 24/7 helpline plus 6 structured counselling sessions with no personal exclusions applied; the optional extra extends to 20 sessions, £1,000–£2,500 outpatient and 28 days in hospital. The 15-level no-claims discount reaches 73%, and claims of £250 or less don't touch it.

Watch-outs

  • Joining at 66 or older means compulsory full medical underwriting and a £500 minimum excess, and targeted cancer therapies/ATMPs are only covered when not available on the NHS.
  • A 14-day deferment period applies to symptoms arising in the first 14 days of a new policy (waivable on switch if confirmed in writing).
  • No published prices anywhere — budget-comparing WPA means getting a real quote.

Who it suits

People who prioritise claims experience over headline price, older joiners (no maximum age), and anyone who wants central-London access priced as a clean optional tier (the Premium Hospitals extra adds the Harley Street/HCA/Royal Marsden tier).

Frequently Asked Questions

On published service data it leads the market: 97% of claims authorised and calls answered in under two minutes on average (WPA, data at 31 Dec 2025), plus it's the only Which? Recommended PMI Provider (2025 survey). Just make sure your quote includes the optional Cancer Care extra if you want cancer cover.

Only if you add the Cancer Care optional extra — it is not part of core Complete Health cover. Added, it's uncapped: all tests and treatments from diagnosis to palliative care, including targeted therapies and ATMPs from WPA's approved list (verified July 2026).

There is no maximum joining age for Complete Health. From age 66, WPA requires full medical underwriting and a minimum £500 excess (verified July 2026).
